How to Sell a Car in Ontario

In Ontario, you can sell your vehicle through the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). You will either need to go to an Auto plan broker or get a duplicate pink slip from MTO. In order to sell a car through MTO, you will need:

  • A copy of your driver’s licence or passport
  • A lien release from the bank or financial institution if you still owe money on your vehicle

Sell your vehicle to a dealer

Dealerships are an excellent place to sell your vehicle, especially if you have a high-value car that needs repairs. Most dealerships will pay less than what you would get from a private buyer, but they do offer convenience and peace of mind in knowing that the sale is legitimate and binding.

In order to sell your vehicle at a dealership, you’ll need to take it there yourself or arrange for transport on their behalf.

Sell to a licensed scrapyard

If you’re looking to sell a car, the easiest thing to do is sell it to a scrapyard. Scrapyards are licensed businesses that specialize in purchasing old and damaged vehicles. They’ll pay you cash for your vehicle, which is great if you’re in need of extra cash but don’t want to deal with all the work involved with selling a used car.

To find a scrapyard near you, Google “[your city] scrap yards” or search on Kijiji for “scrap yards” or “auto salvage.” Once you’ve found one nearby, call them up and ask how much they’d be willing to pay for an older model like yours—they won’t give an exact amount over the phone because there are lots of different factors that go into making up their price (particularly how bad your car looks). You’ll also need some proof of ownership before they can buy it from you: try calling Driver & Vehicle Licensing and ask them if they have any information about potential buyers who may have purchased duplicate titles recently (this will help them verify whether or not someone else has already claimed ownership).

Once everything checks out and the paperwork has been approved by both parties’ lawyers (or whoever), take your keys over to the scrapyard so they can tow away your vehicle as soon as possible! This way nobody will get hurt trying out their new car in traffic again
